DDD03H

Cetacean repellents

The DDD03H helps keep dolphins away from fishing trawls and reduces accidental bycatch. Using acoustic emissions, this deterrent device interacts with the echolocation (sonar) system of cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises), signaling the presence of nearby fishing gear and the potential danger it poses.

The DDD03H (Dolphin Deterrent Device) is an electronic device that emits acoustic signals at frequencies ranging from 50 to 120 kHz, with a power of 165 dB (1 µPa @ 1m).

The DDD03H attaches to fishing gear (trawls) and activates automatically upon contact with water. The number and positioning of DDD03H units should be adjusted based on the shape, length, and underwater or seabed placement of the trawl. The deterrent operates at depths between 10 and 200 meters and withstands pressures up to 30 bar. It weighs 940g, with a diameter of 62 mm and a length of 215 mm, and includes a ring for secure attachment.

The DDD03H complies with European regulations on the conservation of fisheries resources and marine ecosystem protection (Regulation (EU) 2019/1241 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/967). It causes no harm to mammals or fish.

In France, the use of DDD03H by fishing professionals is regulated (decrees of December 26, 2019, and November 27, 2022), mandating the use of deterrent devices for pelagic trawls in the Bay of Biscay to minimize the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems.
